Some words from Mates in Mind:
“Men in the UK are three times more likely to die by suicide than women. However in construction – a male dominated industry– men are three times more likely to die by suicide than the national average for men.
Construction work has a variety of pressures from tight contracts to long hours, time away from loved-ones and managing budgets, not to mention the added stresses of the pandemic and now the rising costs of supplies. Additionally, within construction lies a “macho” culture which prevents many workers from seeking support and help when they may need it, putting further stress on their own mental health and wellbeing.
Established in 2017 by the Health in Construction Leadership Group (HCLG) with the support of the British Safety Council, Mates in Mind charity exists to improve the mental health and wellbeing of workplaces across the UK, working with hundreds of organisations to enable them to start the frank and important conversations about mental health.
Working alongside our partners, sector leaders and growing community of Supporters, we are able to deliver effective change across UK construction workplaces by providing the skills, clarity and confidence to employers on how to raise awareness, improve understanding and address the stigma of mental ill-health. A key part of our approach is to educate and inform the workforce with tailored training for employees, managers and mental health ‘champions’. This tailored approach to training ensures that all employees understand their roles and responsibilities when it comes to mental wellbeing at work. What makes our programme truly unique, is that it is not a one size fits all approach, which then leaves the organisation to roll out a company wide change on its own.
We work together with workplaces to help them identify the areas for improvement and growth, assess their requirements and work in partnership to roll out our programme and continue to support and provide guidance as an organisation grows and develops.
As a registered charity, Mates in Mind relies on the generosity of our fundraisers and donors to provide much-needed funds to help us accomplish our mission to continue our life saving work, breaking down the stigma towards mental health and creating a workplace culture where people feel comfortable to come forward and say – “I’m not okay and I need help” as we seek to reach all corners of the construction industry from Apprentices just starting out in their careers to the hard to reach groups such as SMEs and Sole Traders.”
